How to get to Colaiste Acla, Achill Island, County Mayo


Where is Coláiste Acla? - Cá bhfuil Coláiste Acla?

Coláiste Acla is located in the village of Dooega on Achill Island in County Mayo. Achill is connected to the mainland by a bridge at Achill Sound. Achill Island is approximately a one hour drive from Westport and Castlebar and a four hour drive from Dublin.

Arriving by Bus:
Transport is organised on a supervised bus from Dunboyne M3 Carpark with stops en route. Cost €50 payable with the fee. All buses are of a high standard with seat belts.

Directions to Coláiste Acla from Achill Sound
Continue on the R319 from Achill Sound for 5km. Take a left turn for the village of Dubh Éige and continue for a further 5km.


Parents - Looking for a place to stay?
If you are dropping a student to the Colaiste and need a place to stay, you can book Achill Cottages, located in Achill Sound. Accommodation is also available nearby in Dooega at Lavelle's Seaside House.


Students travelling independently should arrive at the Coláiste between 16:00 and 17:00 on the first day of the course. On the final morning students should be picked up from their Bean an Tí not later than 10:30.


On the morning of departure students travelling by bus are not given breakfast (to avoid travel sickness). They may request a packed lunch from the Bean an Tí or have breakfast €5 at the stop en route.

FAQ - Ceisteanna

    What is the average age of students?
    All courses are open to students aged 11-17. Students age 18 or over are accepted on Cúrsa D or Cúrsa E only (Leaving Cert courses)/

    How are the children grouped in class?
    Students are grouped by age and ability.

    What do students study in class?
    Emphasis is placed on Irish as a spoken language. We also cover grammar and help prepare students for exams.

    Do students have to speak as Gaeilge all the time?
    Students must speak as Gaeilge for the duration of the course.

    Will I get sent home if I say one word of Bearla?
    While every effort is made to help students there must at all times be more Gaeilge than Bearla in each sentence. Students who persistently converse as Bearla will get sent home.

    Can I bring my mobile phone?
    Students may bring their phones to the Coláiste. On arrival students must hand over their phones to an Bean an Tí. Mobiles will be made available to the students during 22:00 and 22:30 under the supervision of an Bean an Tí.

    Are their any additional expenses?
    There is a €10 charge for laundry payable to an Bean an Tí and €5 for class notes. We recommend €50 pocket money.

    Are the children well supervised?
    Students are fully supervised at all times.

    Where do students stay?
    Students stay in local Gaeltacht approved homes.

    What is the food like?
    The Bean an Tí provides a wide variety of healthy balanced meals. All dietary requirements are catered for.

    Can I stay with a friend?
    Groups of 2/3 children may be accommodated together.

    Where is the Coláiste?
    The Coláiste is situated on Achill, Co. Mayo. Take the road from Achill Sound towards Keel for 5km. At the sign for Dubh Éige take a left hand turn and continue to the village of Dubh Éige a distance of 5km.

    Where does the bus stop?
    The bus departs Dunboyne M3 Carpark @ 13:00
    Mullingar (Hammils on the N4) @13:30
    Longford (Texaco on the Strokestown Rd.)@ 14:15
    Castlebar (McDonalds) @ 16:00
    A bus may be organized from Limerick depending on numbers.

    Are the buses belted?
    All buses traveling from Dublin are fully belted.

    Can parents visit?
    Parents may visit during the course. The most appropriate time is from 11am Saturday or Sunday. Children must be picked up and signed out in the Colaiste and may be dropped back to their Bean an Tí or the Coláiste. 

    Are there activities on the weekend?
    On both Saturday and Sunday we have a full programme of activities.

    How do I send post to a student?
    Post should be addressed to your child care of Coláiste Acla, Acaill, Co. Muigheo. All post will be distributed as soon as possible.
